On an oddly shaped lot in Soquel near Highway 1, two existing cottages will be joined by a new two-bedroom ADU built over a two-car garage. The garage will be constructed of cast-in-place, board-formed concrete walls with rhythmically spaced variations in the size of the forming boards. The ADU, which cantilevers over the garage below, will have walls of "shou sugi ban" charred wood siding, and a standing seam metal roof. Despite its small size (just under 800 SF), the ADU packs in two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a powder room, and a light-filled, high-ceilinged open space for Living, Dining, and Kitchen. A large, five-panel bifold door will open that space up to a large deck embraced by two iconic California trees: a Coast Live Oak (Quercus Agrifolia) and a Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens).
