Shafter Avenue

Created for a deep residential lot in Oakland’s Shafter neighborhood, where Rockridge eases into Temescal, this design demonstrates the viability of adding a substantial 3 bedroom, 3-1/2 bathroom residence to replace an existing smaller bungalow. Two existing residential structures would remain, to maintain an existing income stream. The house is structured with two main volumes — the front one, more private, clad in “shou sugi ban” charred siding, and the rear one, more public, clad in corrugated metal — separated by a small courtyard bridged by a glass gallery. The circulation path defined by the gallery extends into (and beyond) the two main volumes to create a strong indoor/outdoor linkage throughout the site.
