In a relatively dense and highly walkable neighborhood of Menlo Park, a professional couple with a college-age daughter sought to update an existing 20-year-old home of about 1850 SF. Without the option of expanding — the lot was already maxed out in terms of coverage — the focus was instead on modernizing the existing structure: redoing all three bathrooms, opening up the completely renovated kitchen to the rest of the house, replacing (and simplifying) windows, and lightening the staircase. While much of the effort went into the home’s interior, the exterior was also updated with a new deck, green wall, bench, custom fountain, and barbecue and lawn areas, all designed by PBA.
